Canyon Lake remains Riverside County's safest city New FBI crime statistics reveal the success of Canyon Lakes unwavering commitment to crime prevention and public safety. Consistently ranked as one of Southern Californias safest communities, the City of Canyon Lake has emerged once again as the safest city in Riverside County in 2007, based on recently released FBI Uniform Crime Index, according to Chief James McElvain.  The 2007 FBI crime statistics for cities in Riverside County show Canyon Lake experienced the fewest crimes per 10,000 residents. The statistics showed 405.2 Part One Crimes per 10,000 residents on average for all of the cities in Riverside County combined, whereas Canyon Lake reported 167.2 for 2007.  Its really a community effort involving our residents, our businesses, our city leaders and our officers, Chief McElvain said of the low crime rate. By working together, we make our City safer for everyone.  Mayor Carl Armbrust praised the excellent work of the Canyon Lake Police Department and the efforts of the citys Special Enforcement team, a group of trained personnel with law enforcement capabilities.  We are very proud of our officers and we truly appreciate their efforts in ensuring Canyon Lake remains on top, said Carl. Our community has always made public safety its top priority, and they care about keeping our crime rate low so Canyon Lake will remain a safe place to live, work and play.  The Canyon Lake Police Department provides 24-hour service and a proactive Community Oriented Policing (COP) officer who focuses on crime prevention by working with the community and businesses to investigate and track illegal activities.  Although the police department is the communitys only law enforcement agency authorized to make arrests, it also cooperates closely with a private security firm contracted by the Canyon Lake Property Owners Association.  Efforts by the police are also proving successful on the streets. Concentrated programs by the Canyon Lake Police led arrests for driving under the influence to increase 352 percent during 2007. The heightened traffic enforcement by Canyon Lake Police also resulted in an 83 percent increase in traffic citations last year, which helped reduce traffic accidents in the City by 35 percent.
